Finance Director
Richmond Ballet, the State Ballet of Virginia, seeks a Finance Director to join a dynamic and diverse team of arts professionals at one of the country’s most admired and accomplished regional ballet companies.
Under the direction of the Managing Director, the Finance Director will oversee all functions related to finance including monitoring the budget, preparing forecasts, managing cash flow, month-end reporting, including journal entries to close books, coordinating the annual budget process, and assisting department heads on an ongoing basis in understanding the budget process and departmental responsibilities. In coordination with the Artistic Director and Managing Director, this position ensures full transparency over financial performance and provides monthly reporting to the Finance Committee and Board leadership.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Reviews transactions posted to bank accounts to identify any unusual transactions or activity that requires recording in NetSuite
- Leads a staff of accounting professionals dedicated to managing the financial controls and accounting procedures of the organization
- Accomplishes department objectives by managing, planning and evaluating department activities
- Monitors and coaches staff results by communicating job expectations and performance reviews
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Reviews transactions posted to bank accounts to identify any unusual transactions or activity that requires recording in NetSuite
- Reviews posting of cash receipts and disbursements, as recorded by Accountants
- Records Campaign cash receipts and payments
- Reviews payroll JE prepared by Accountant
- Reviews and posts all month-end JEs prepared by Accountants during month-end close
- Reviews monthly bank reconciliations prepared by Accountant, including follow up on outstanding checks and deposits in transit
- Reviews account coding for all credit card purchases
- Records activity in operating reserve and endowment accounts per Davenport statements
- Records depreciation expense
- Prepares monthly reconciliations for activity of the School of Richmond Ballet (SRB)
- Prepares operating statement and presents operating statement to Finance Committee and Board
- Comparison of actual to budget (via discussion with department leaders) to prepare updated forecast for inclusion in the operating statement
- Reviews all balance sheet and income statement accounts for missing payments or miscoded transactions
- Reconciles contributed revenue accounts to Neon, with the assistance of Development Associate
- Monitors need for invoices and communicates this to Accountant for preparation and distribution
- Reconciles campaign activity to validate balance in Campaign cash account
- Prepares all audit schedules, including pledge confirmations, and preparation of annual financial statements
- Prepares all schedules requested by external auditor for preparation of 990s; review and tie-out of 990s prepared by external auditor
- Performs all year-end close activities including recording of receivables/payables, trades/in-kinds, and realized gains/losses on investment activity as well as overseeing performance of shoe, bar and merchandise inventory counts
- Calculates annual endowment draw and prepares draw
- Prepares annual budget, including 5-year capex budget
- Participates in meetings with insurance broker to evaluate insurance needs and renewals
- Files all compliance requirements such as VDACS registration, business license renewal, SCC annual reports, debt covenant calculations, tax exempt applications, etc.
- Reviews 1099s prepared by Accountant for accuracy and completeness before filing
- Reviews/approves checks and wires prepared by Accountant and ensures consistency between check amount and amount recorded in NetSuite
- Maintains manual fixed asset and depreciation schedule
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the job classification
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Education/ Experience:
- BA or BS in Accounting/Finance
- 10+ years accounting experience working in a leadership role

Development & Database Administrator
The Development & Database Administrator oversees important day to day practices of the Development team with an instinctive eye for managing finance details and data. Supporting the efforts of all areas of development, the Development & Database Administrator tracks receivables and is adept at database usage and reconciliation practices. This position reports to the Development Director but also works closely with the CFO and the Finance team. In addition to the database administration this role is the point contact for donor cultivating events for the organization.
Job Responsibilities:
- Processing all payments that come into the building including donations, SRB tuition and Production payments.
- Managing Neon One, the donor database and CRM, entering all pledges and donations, and reviewing donor data for accuracy.
- Maintaining all Development expense records and reconciling with Finance team.
- Creating various contributed revenue reports.
- Preparing Development reports for Board meetings.
- Assisting CFO with annual audit preparation.
- Maintaining financial records for the Gala and other special events.
- Assisting with generating reports to create donor listings in the season Playbill.
- Procuring and maintaining event supplies and expensing usage as needed.
- Attending performances and donor cultivation events as needed, rotating with other Development team members.
- Work closely with the Development Director and volunteer committees in organizing donor cultivation events, including the annual gala, rehearsal viewings and receptions during performances.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the job classification.
Education/ Experience:
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Prior experience with database software and management
- Proficient using Microsoft Office
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- 1+ years of development and/or fundraising experience preferred
Salary Range: $44,000 – $46,000

Musician
Under moderate supervision, the Richmond Ballet Musician is responsible for providing appropriate musical accompaniment for the School of Richmond Ballet and/ or Minds In Motion classes.
Job Responsibilities:
• Commit to a weekly playing schedule during the school year (September – May)
• Support the dance teacher, and enrich the student experience, by providing appropriate musical accompaniment during class
• Learn and play set pieces or rehearsal pieces as required
• Arrange for appropriate substitutes when necessary, and substitute classes as available
• Support summer programming as available
Education/ Experience:
• Prior experience as an accompanist
